Description:

'The Herball or Generall Historie of Plantes Gathered' by John Gerarde of London Master in Chirurgerie Second Expanded Edition Leatherbound Hardcover Folio Volume
Thomas Johnson (1590s-1644) after John Gerard (1545-1612) with Engraving by John Payne (1607-1647); Published by Adam Islip, Joice Norton, and Richard Whitakers, 1633
While heavily borrowing illustrations and text from earlier sources Johnson's revision of Gerarde's Herball is considered among the first landmark, extensive English-language botanical reference for household and community apothecaries and many continued to reference the work well into the 19th century.

The 19th century leatherbound book having gilt-tooled blind stamps for Ralph Sneyd (1793-1870) on the front and back covers. Sneyd, an English industrialist based about Staffordshire, inherited his father's estate, Keele Hall in 1829. He immediately started planning the buildout of the gardens with artist and landscape architect William Sawrey Gilpin (1762-1843) and started enmasse planting shortly thereafter and developed a reputation for his cross cultivars of Rhododendron arboreum. Unfortunately, an inherited debt, in addition to instances of poor business administration, would limit the maintenance of the estate and ultimately prevent the estate from staying in the family. Sold at auction in 1903, including the majority of the Sneyd family's early books and manuscripts, many would be sold to the artist Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919); a large portion of these books would be acquired by Sneyd from the dealer Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845) of London.
