    Note:
Founded in 1895, New York's E.F. Caldwell & Co. quickly became the preeminent designer and manufacturer of lighting in the United States, and remained so through the mid-20th century. The firm would have been a logical choice to create these monumental, historically-inspired torchères for Washington, DC's Folger Library. In addition to providing lighting and metalwork to the major architects of the day including Carrère & Hastings, Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson, and Cass Gilbert, the firm would have been well-known in Washington for its contributions to the 1902 White House renovation under the supervision of architects McKim, Mead & White.

For additional discussion of Caldwell's lighting fixtures in the White House see John Kelly, " Edison's Bright Idea for the White House", The Washington Post, January 5, 2013.
  • Condition:
  • Each base with scattered chips to edges, especially to bottom edges; some chips filled; each with repaired loss to front right corner, the largest measures 3-1/2 x 1/2 inch; some scratching surfaces of bases; one with small but deep scratch to twisted wrought iron standard and lacking four screws attaching leaves of base to standard; the second with replaced (or overly cleaned) ring around central element of top of standard; will need to be rewired.
