Mason's Ironstone Chinoiserie Part Dinner Service
Circa 1820
Consisting of:
50 Dinner plates
8 Salad plates
17 Soup plates
4 Covered sauce tureens on stand
3 Covered square vegetable dishes
1 Soup tureen with undertray
1 Pair of oval platters
2 Open Vegetable dishes
1 Open serving dish
1 Meat platter
1 Strainer
Each printed and decorated in pastel shades of pink, green, yellow and blue with Chinoiserie figures in a landscape. Each with printed factory mark, most overpainted green; and most with impressed circular factory mark. 95 pieces. Some with some wear to decoration.
Diameter of dinner plates: 9-3/8 in (23.8 cm); Length of soup tureen: 13 in (33 cm)

  • Condition:
  • Dinner plates: Each with significant wear to centers, especially to faces and also to landscape, including knife marks; several with wear to printed border; 7 with one or more hairline cracks, two of which do not go through to front, one with additional crazing to verso and scattered brown spots; 1 with small chip to exterior of rim and with scattered discolored glaze misses (brownish spots); 2 with chips to rim; 8 with scattered brown spots and some yellowish discoloration, looks like scratching to edges of cavetto; 1 with house paint residue to border; 1 with small pit to center of white ground;

    Salad Plates: 1 with hairline crack to rim; 2 with chip to rim; all but one with significant wear to centers and borders and knife marks;

    Soup plates: 2 with crazing to interior and scattered brown spots; 2 with light crazing and some yellowish discoloration to cavetto; 1 with scattered brown spots; 1 with six hairline cracks and crazing; 1 with 1/4 inch firing crack to rim; 1 with large discolored glaze miss to center;

    Covered Sauce Tureens: Each with brown discoloration (Heat) to underside of tureen; each with wear to gilt decoration on finial; 1 with discoloration to interior of tureen; abrasion to upper left area of undertray and some wear to grass; 2 with some rubbing to undertrays at right side; 1 with lid broken and repaired and with white putty residue to interior of tureen;

    Covered Vegetable Dishes: Each with wear to gilt finials; 1 with repair to rim ( broken into 5 pieces); 1 with lid having fine crazing and overall slightly discolored;

    Open Vegetable Dishes: 1 with interior with some brown discoloration and some wear to decoration on faces; 1 with some wear to decoration on rims;

    Pair of Oval Trays (12-1/2 inches): Significant wear to centers and rims;

    Open Serving Dish: some fine crazing and heat discoloration to center; one imperfection to glaze at upper right; wear to decoration around edges of cavetto and gown of center figure;

    Meat Platter: Significant wear to figures, crazing overall and some heat discoloration at upper center;

    Meat Strainer: Some scattered discolored knife marks; minor rubbing to glaze in grass and at upper right;

    Tureen: Crazing to lid; some discolored scratches to interior sides; one hairline to side about 2 inches long; brown discoloration to underside; white putty residue to interior;

    Undertray: Wear to glaze especially to figures at left and grass at left.
