  • Provenance:
Collection of Count Gustaf Adolf Sparre (1746-1794), Sahlgren-Sparre Palace, Gotenburg or Kulla Gunnarstorp, near Helsingborg, by repute
Mr. & Mrs. Axel Nordstrom, Sweden
Eli Lium, Washington, DC, by descent
Purchased in these rooms, European & American Furniture and Decorations, May 21, 2005, lot 301

A wax seal identified as that of Gustaf Sparre is located on the verso of the frame. Sparre was a Swedish nobleman and son of the Director of the Swedish East India Company. In 1772, Sparre converted rooms at Sahlgren-Sparre Palace into gallery space to house his art collection, acquired on his Grand Tour of Europe. The frame is presumed to be one of the original frames commissioned by Sparre and was conserved by William A. Lewin in 2006.
