    Note:
    Fanny Elssler (1810-1884), the renowned Viennese ballerina, made her opening debut in 1829. She went on to perform internationally during the 1830's and '40s, in Berlin, Paris, London and Washington. This portrait was painted in 1832, during which time she often danced in the Berlin Opera.

    This painting was loaned to the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany for display during a reception honoring Roger Stevens, chairman of the board of the Kennedy Center, Martin Feinstein, executive director of performing arts for the Kennedy Center and the Stuttgart Ballet on June 4, 1979.

    This painting has been faced with mulberry paper as a conservation measure, as noted from a previous catalogue.

  • Under black light: with milky-green varnish; with scattered areas of restoration throughout; relined and edges paper taped; restretched; overall with craquelure and scattered areas of loss throughout; faced with mulberry paper (as noted from a previous catalogue); with scattered areas of milky white residue, possibly caused by blooming under, or lifting of, mulberry paper; pigment appears to be lifting in areas; scattered restoration visible on surface.
