Japanese Lacquer Picnic Box (Sage-Jubako) 19th Century The rectangular frame with silver carrying handle, containing four tiered food trays, a longer shallow tray and two pewter bottles (tokkuri) on a lacquer stand fitted with a drawer, allover decorated in gold and silver hiramakie, takamakie and kirikane on a nashiji ground of butterflies and floral mons amidst pine trees and flowering branches, in a red painted storage box. some minor cracks. 10.5 x 12.5 x 6.5in 26.7 x 31.8 x 16.5 cm Exhibited: Birmingham Museum of Art, Birmingham Alabama, 1957-1975, on loan from present owners.
