Description:

Jamie Wyeth
(American, b. 1946)
Kent House (Study)
Watercolor on paper, Circa 1972; apparently in good condition. Framed.*
Signed J. Wyeth l.l.; with artist's label on verso

Note:
This work is a study for Kent House, which is now in the collection of the Brandywine Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.

Rockwell Kent first came to Monhegan Island in 1906, where he purchased a lot on Horn's Hill overlooking the village and built a home for himself. When his mother and the rest of his family joined him the following year, he constructed Kent House for her at the island's exposed southern tip.

In 1968, Wyeth purchased the house at the age of 22, using proceeds from his first solo exhibition. According to the Brandywine Museum, "His admiration for Kent is reflected in the dramatic depiction of the structure, which towers over the sea on a rocky outcrop. Here Wyeth elevates the house on its own island acropolis, with a clear delineation of land and sky that seems inspired by Kent's geometric approach to composing landscapes."
