Description:

French Directoire Style Silver and Ebony 'Grande Bouilloire' Spirit Kettle
Robert Linzeler (1872-1941), Paris, Circa 1900
Stamped maker's mark to burner and lip of lid (worn) with several first standard (950-silver) 'Minerve' bigorne stamps to burner, stand, pins, body, and lid.

  • Provenance: Unlike their neighbors across the Channel, the French generally had a much more sedated high-tea culture, despite their colonial holdings, ultimately favoring more stimulating fare offered through their cafes and coffee-houses - making examples of service hollowware all the more uncommon. Some explanation of this was political, as the coffee trade was typically controlled by Iberian or Arabic agents until trade broadened; as it was cultural with many protestant countries considering it to be possibly overstimulating, inspiring simple people to aggressive tendencies, and being too closely aligned with the Democratic and working-class ideologies of liberty, fraternity, and equality in comparison to the rigid social hierarchies of an overly sweetened cuppa. This unfortunately overlooks the many virtues which fruit when enacting 'passion with restraint' in all things.

Unlike the traditionally embossed floral-scrolls or figures endemic of late Victorian Rococo-revival and Art Nouveau decorative arts the kettle has sedated emphasis to minimal decoration while exploiting a general shape, silhouette redirecting light in a fashion customary of the Baroque. Rather than reliance on cheap engine-turned patterns, ornamentation is accomplished by hand with a Neoclassically chased stand and Burgundian Renaissance style engraved bellflowers and spandrels along the upper wall and lid - more customary for Lille or even Dutch and Belgian silverwork. It is possible the piece was commissioned for someone familiar with the region; however, it is likely that the silversmith was taking his cue from the introspective tendencies within Art Nouveau, exploring traditional yet previously underrepresented themes in the medium and marketing them to a modern, progressing audience. This perhaps is a very early foray with Art Deco - a touch of the almost ascetic when considering modern beauty.

Robert Linzeler came from a family of reputable silversmiths who were working in Paris since 1840; however, a clear indication of Robert's ambition, talent, and dedication to the craft is demonstrated as early as 1897, when the 25-year-old Robert purchased the business, brand of Jules Piault, silversmith to Napoleon III, partially adopting his mark and expanding upon his client base. Shortly thereafter, in 1900 Robert earned much praise and recognition for exhibited flatware and decorations at the Parision Exposition Universalle. Robert clearly was doing much to cultivate attention, partnering with rising fashion designers and having his silver and vertu continually featured in the early 20th century publications such as 'Les Modes'. As the century would progress Robert would be doing less work in silver and more work with gold, gemstones, and enamel supplying work for among the most important French jewelers such as Cartier and partnering for a time with Russian jeweler Marchak - being one of the 30 jewelers to exhibit 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes; their pieces were considered among the best of all time. Eventually Robert's business would decline as he grew older, and he would pass shortly before WWII.
