Notes:
An adventurer at heart, Finn Haakon Frolich would leave home, Oslo at nine to sail the seas and would delay his nomadic life at eighteen to study under Daniel Chester French. Although not entirely, nine years later he would be dispatched to Paris to study under Augustus St. Gaudens, with additional sojourns to South Africa, modelling President Kruger and a tribal princess. After returning to New York and contributing further to French, Roland Perry, Alexander Proctor's projects in New York, Paris, and St. Louis - in desperation following a failed marriage and fewer opportunities Frolich went as far as he could on a whim and woke up in Seattle. He seemed to benefit from the change and would prolifically generate works, not least the ‘Spirit of the Pacific' for which he would be honored with directorship of sculpture for the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in Seattle in 1909, in addition to other Beaux Arts monuments and privately sponsored portraits. Once again, indebted and with a personal life in shambles, Frolich would flee south to California where he would ultimately stay; herein where the legendary man of letters Jack London would enter the fold. Running in similar circles, Frolich would find a kindred-spirit in London, being fellow adventurers, and share a mutually happy friendship, living together when he was perhaps his most vulnerable. For all his faults and despite his troubled domestic life, Frolich would stay in California, and would do much to personally train, encourage and steward the new and upcoming community of artists there - he would always be known for his outgoing and effervescent personality.
