Chippendale Mahogany Oxbow Slant-Front Desk-and-Bookcase
Boston, Circa 1760-1780
In two parts: the upper section having two cyma-molded inset panel doors enclosing an arrangement of nine cubbyholes above two short drawers and a central adjustable shelf above two candle slides, the slanted hinged writing lid opening to view a central arch glazed prospect door enclosing two shell-and-block drawers flanked by two half-pilaster turned document drawers and an arrangement of four valanced pigeonholes surrounded by two sunburst-carved square drawers and an arrangement of six drawers. Finials probably replaced; chip to right section of writing lid; prospect door glazed panel probably added and lacking lock; area broken where slant-front lock engages.

  • As noted in catalogue; cracks and gouge to slant front; loss to top of slant front; crack to panel door of top section; cracks to reeded pilasters of upper section; cracks to each side of each section; lopers with repaired cracks; repair to back left foot; front right leg with replaced return; repairs and losses to pediment; underside of top drawer with pencil inscription Buxton March 5, 1868 Harriet H. Elden/ Buxton March 22 1860 and Harriet H Elden, Buxton May 11 1874/ All is Sad, lonely to me; inner writing surface of desk is maple, possibly later but appears to be old; prospect door lacking pin for hinge and lacking escutcheon; some losses and replacements to pulls on interior drawers; brasses appear to be original.
