    Notes:
  • According to Morrison H. Heckscher in his well-regarded and often cited "The New York Serpentine Card Table", Magazine Antiques, May 1973, pp 974-983, this table follows the characteristics of the Type I "Van Rensselaer" type games tables. Within that grouping, this table''s carvings place it within the B grouping.

Further structural analysis, as expounded upon by Frank M. Levy in his August 1991 Winterthur Thesis, "The Most Opulent Form: A Structural Analysis of New York Five-Legged Card Tables", pp. 33-44, clearly indicate this table belonging to The Apprentice Group of the Willett Pearsee Workshop.

The Museum of the City of New York, Mrs. Giles Whiting Collection, Descended in the Frost Family of Rochester, NY

    Note:
As these tables tend to descend within New York families, it is worthwhile noting that the consignor is also a direct descendant of William Nelson Page (1854-1932), who held various business connections with Abram S. Hewitt, a former Mayor of New York City and a member of the famous Cooper-Hewitt family. Other prominent ancestors include the Taylor and Sandford Families from New York, NY and the Van Alstyne Family from Albany, NY.

Weschler''s would like to thank Frank Levy for his assistance in the cataloguing of this exquisite piece.
