Carlo Bugatti Metal and Bone Inlaid and Hammered-Copper Mounted Black Lacquered Wood Writing Desk
Circa 1900
Having a three-quarter gallery above a Moorish-influenced central niche flanked by an arrangement of six graduated drawers above a writing surface within a wrought-copper border above a shaped frieze with a single drawer, the whole raised on rear wrought-copper wrapped columnar legs and shaped front legs with complementary copper embellishments. Overall inlaid with metal and bone stylized Islamic, animal, foliate and geometric motifs. Unsigned. Some repairs to the central niche; writing surface probably replaced.

  • Condition: Some repairs to the central niche; writing surface probably replaced (as noted in the catalogue). Repaired break to central drawer (below writing surface); one section of apron, opposite central drawer, loose; minor wood loss to edges of apron where it meets the side of the desk; piece of copper mounting bent backwards at apron. Two turned supports at the gallery possibly lacking bead finial. The central niche with cracks and repairs. The drawers above writing surface with some losses to metal inlay; one drawer with some wood loss at pull. One side of desk with repairs and restoration to veneered surface and inlay. The legs and feet lacking some applied bone inlay. One front leg with wear at back edges; small area of wood loss where the leg meets the case. The back of case with abrasion to black lacquered surface and several applied moldings replaced.
