'Grebber' Tulip
Unsigned
Watercolor and bodycolor on paper, circa 1636; apparently in good condition. Framed.*
Sight size: 11-1/2 x 7-3/4 in (29.2 x 19.7 cm)

  • Dimensions: Sight size: 11-1/2 x 7-3/4 in (29.2 x 19.7 cm)
  • Notes: Note:
The work is inscribed on verso in French (translated): "This tulip was painted by a Dutch painter: J. Marcellus [sic] famous for these tulips and watercolors, it was painted in 1636."

This work was executed at the height of ''Tulipmania'', a period in which speculation on tulip bulbs reached exorbitant highs before crashing in 1637. It was likely part of a "tulip book", a catalogue of tulips commissioned by a bulb dealer to show prospective buyers what the bulb would look like once in bloom.

    Provenance:
The Krelage Collection, Haarlem, by repute.

The Krelage nursery, founded in 1811 in Holland, gained international recognition for its bulbs. The founders of the nursery began a collection of nursery catalogues, eventually amassing more than 1300 books and journals.
  • Condition: Sheet size: 12 x 8-3/16 in, edges slightly trimmed; on heavy, laid paper with a watermark of an eagle within a wreath; affixed to mat on vertical edges with clear tape; overall with mild toning, scattered tiny spots of foxing, light-brown mark l.r. and minor fading.
