Description:

Philip Johnson and Richard Kelly for Edison Price Inc. Canister Floor Lamp
Design Introduced 1954
Composed of a brushed-brass finished canister housing a central floodlight, recessed within a steel ribbed diffuser, extending out to equidistant stretchers, balanced on four weathered brass posts, terminating at a screw-fastened enameled aluminum ring fitter, supporting a removable enameled aluminum shade. Without visible maker's mark or label.

    Provenance:
  • Property from a Bethesda, Maryland Estate

    Notes:
Architect Philip Johnson (1906-2005) and lighting designer Richard Kelly (1910-1977) collaborated to produce this lamp model as a means of mitigating the excessive glare and reflection visible on the glazed walls of, Johnson's signature work and residence, Glass House in New Canaan that are produced by traditional, source-specific lighting. An application of Kelly's 'perception-oriented lighting design', by projecting light from a hidden source and softly reflecting it throughout an interior, light in itself is limited to only what is essential.
  • Dimensions:
  • Height overall: 41-1/2 in (105.4 cm); Diameter of shade: 25-1/4 in (64.1 cm)
  • Condition:
  • Apparently functional electrical and dimmer, apart from: minor indentation to peak of shade; varying uneven instances of deterioration to exterior finish of canister; minor contact wear along ring fitter and lip of shade; minor toning to enamel; other normal age-appropriate handling wear with associated disruptions to patina commensurate with age, particularly to lower extremities of legs, feet; general exposure related speckling and disruptions throughout exterior of canisters and posts with minor verdigris and debris accretion to recesses, particularly between outer case and insert of canister; minor bending to plug prongs

As a courtesy, condition reports for any lot are available from Weschler's prior to the sale, upon request. Such a condition report should in no instance replace first hand inspections by a prospective buyer or his/her agent. Any description of a lot’s dimensions and weights is approximate. Descriptions we make about lots may not describe all faults or restorations.

All property is sold "As Is" in accordance with the terms set forth in paragraph 1C of Conditions of Sale.

Neither Weschler's nor the Consignor makes any express or implied warranty or representation as to the condition of any lot offered for sale, and no statement made at any time, whether oral or written, shall constitute such a warranty or representation.

Weights given for stones we offer for sale are based solely on measurements and known gemological formula; they are approximate, not exact. Weight may differ once a stone is removed from its setting. You are advised to verify weight estimates prior to bidding at auction.

While we do our best to protect the framing on the artwork, we will not be responsible for damage, regardless of cause.

Weschler's will not remove an item out of its frame for shipping purposes once the lot has been sold. It is the purchaser's responsibility to find a third-party shipper who specializes in fine art handling for these cases.
