    Notes:
  • Note:
Major-General Charles George Gordon CB was born in 1833 in Woolwich, London, the son of Major General Henry William Gordon and Elizabeth Gordon. He was one of eleven children, five girls and six boys. In 1848 Gordon entered the Royal Military Academy as a Gentlemen Cadet and in 1852 he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers.

When the Crimean war broke out, Gordon managed to persuade the War Office to send him to Crimea. For his services in the Crimean war, he was awarded the Crimean war medal and clasp as well as a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour.

In the 1860s, Gordon served in China and was instrumental in stopping the Taiping Rebellion, during this time he gained the nickname ''Chinese Gordon''. In 1871 he was promoted to full Colonel and became the British commissioner on the Danube. By 1874, he became the Governor-General of the Sudan, where he did much to suppress revolts and the local slave trade.

In early 1884 Gordon had been sent to Khartoum with instructions to secure the evacuation of loyal soldiers and civilians and to depart with them. After defending the city for a year, in 1885 Gordon died aged 51 two days before the British relief force arrived.
