Note:
We would like to thank Karen Chastagnol, who published this painting in her catalogue raisonné of Colombel in 2012, for her kind assistance cataloging this work:
"Though known only through its color photographic reproduction, [Chastagnol] recognizes here a painting by the hand of the artist. Here the figure takes up that of Diana in the Portrait of a Lady in the guise of Diana returning from the hunt of 1698 (Matthiesen Gallery, London). This portrait shows a woman represented under the features of Flora but the identity of the model remains unknown. This motif is taken from an antique model disseminated by the series engraved by Otho Vaenius of the Amorum Emblemata (1608), which illustrates under the features of the putti various maxims: Nocet osse locutum."
