    Note:
Regarded as one of Thompson''s seminal works, this print is part of the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C., among other prominent institutions.

Mildred Thompson began formal artistic training at Howard University in 1953, studying under James Porter-- artist, instructor of painting and drawing, Chairman of the Art Department and Director of the Howard University Art Gallery. Professor Porter published Modern Negro Art in 1943, the first comprehensive study in the United States of African-American art. After graduation, Porter continued to advise Thompson and suggested she study in Germany.

With a growing focus on underrepresented Afro-American artists and women abstract artists, work by Mildred Thompson has resurfaced with a series of recent exhibitions, several of which have focused on her prints from her study of printmaking techniques while living in Germany during the 1960s and 1970s.

Thompson had a lifelong fascination with scientific phenomena, studying space, mathematics and physics, much like her fellow Washington, D.C. artist, Alma Thomas. These interests are reflected here, especially in prints of the Helio Centric series.
