Underside with maker's marks F. & G. within eagles. Chip to top corner edge of handle.

Dr. George Cheyne Shattuck, Sr. was born in Templeton, MA, July 17, 1783, and died March 18, 1854, in Boston, MA. After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1803, he went on to get his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1807. He would then go on to become a prominent physician in Boston. Dr. Shattuck was President of the Massachusetts Medical Society in Boston from 1836-1840. In 1852, Dr. Shattuck gifted Dartmouth College with $7,000 to be matched by the Trustees in order to build an Observatory. In 1806 and 1807, he won the Boylston Prize for three medical papers, two of which were titled, "Structure and Physiology of the Skin" and "Causes of Biliary Secretions." In 1808, he published Three Dissertations on Boylston Prize Questions for the Years 1806 and 1807.
